About Me
WHY I BECAME A SLEEP CONSULTANT
Meet Louise: OCN Level 6 Accredited Sleep Consultant
From Social Work to Sleep Science
Before founding The Sleep Architects, my background was in social work, where I supported vulnerable children, adults, and people with disabilities. Like many parents, I transitioned into sleep consultancy after experiencing the overwhelming reality of sleep deprivation firsthand. I saw how deeply it impacts physical health, mental wellbeing, and family life.
My Journey with Twins and Post-Natal Anxiety
My twins were born six weeks early, and the early days were a blur of exhaustion. The lack of sleep took a significant toll, leading to post-natal anxiety. As a first-time mum, I felt lost. I spent my nights searching Google for:
-
“How to get my baby to sleep?”
-
“Why is my baby awake all night?”
-
“How to survive the 4-month sleep regression.”
The Problem with Generic Wake Windows
I tried every generic routine and wake window I could find online. However, I didn’t realize that my daughter had low sleep needs while my son had high sleep needs.
I found myself in a cycle of utter chaos furiously rocking one baby to sleep because I feared they’d be overtired, only to have to wake them up 30 minutes later to protect a rigid, generic schedule. Looking back, I realized that I didn’t know what I didn’t know, every child’s 24-hour sleep needs are unique.
Moving Past Guilt to Transformative Sleep
By the time my twins were 11 months old, we were struggling with multiple sleep associations, including rocking, feeding to sleep, and co-sleeping. My mental health was suffering, and I was due to return to work.
I was reluctant to try sleep training due to guilt and a fear of crying. We tried gentle methods, but without consistency, nothing changed. Finally, we tried a responsive approach using timed intervals. To my shock, they settled in just 20 minutes. It was life-changing. My health improved, my children were happier, and I finally felt like myself again.
Why Choose a Level 6 OCN Accredited Sleep Practitioner?
Determined to help other families avoid the misinformation trap, I completed a Level 6 OCN Accredited Sleep Practitioner course. This advanced training provided me with a deep understanding of:
-
Sleep Physiology: How the body and brain actually regulate sleep.
-
Environmental Factors: What truly impacts a child’s ability to rest.
-
Evidence-Based Methods: A variety of techniques to suit different temperaments.
Most importantly, it gave me the confidence to support parents using science, not guesswork.
Sleep is a Necessity, Not a Luxury
Sleep is as essential as food and water. There are no prizes for being the most sleep-deprived parent. If you can relate to my story and are ready to move from surviving to thriving, I would love to help you and your child get the restorative sleep you deserve
We find that using so called ‘gentle methods’ or ‘no cry approaches’ do not actually involve your child not crying. Of course there is an exception to every rule but more than likely whatever method you use there will be tears. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, babies cry to communicate and of course they are going to object to a big change. Your baby isn’t crying because there is something wrong with them, they are crying because they are objecting to the change.
At The Sleep Architects, we believe in transparency. One of the most common myths in the industry is that “gentle” or “no-cry” methods involve zero tears. In reality, babies use crying to communicate, and they will almost always object to a change in their routine.
Whether you choose a structured approach or a more gradual one, some level of protest is natural. Our goal isn’t to promise “no crying,” but to ensure your child feels supported and that the process is as fast and effective as possible.
Choosing the Right Method for Your Family
As an OCN Level 6 Sleep Practitioner, I offer a range of methods because I know that every parent has a different comfort level.
1. Responsive Timed Intervals (Recommended for under 14 months)
For many families, we use a method involving short, timed intervals. You leave the room for brief periods and return to offer consistent comfort and reassurance.
Why we recommend it: It is often significantly faster than “gentle” methods.
Fewer total tears: Because it works quickly, the total amount of crying over the course of the training is often much less than a “gentle” approach that can go on for weeks.
Consistency: This method can be easier for exhausted parents to stick to, which is the #1 key to success.
2. Gentle & Gradual Methods
I offer gentle sleep coaching for parents who prefer to stay in the room or move through transitions more slowly.
The Process: We use “fading” techniques to gradually reduce your presence.
Who it’s for: Parents who are particularly anxious about separation and are happy to commit to a longer, more gradual process.
Grounded in Your Child’s Individual Needs
Regardless of which method you choose—Responsive Intervals or Gentle Coaching—the foundation remains the same. We don’t use generic wake windows. Instead, we calculate your child’s individual 24-hour sleep needs to ensure they are biologically ready to settle, whichever method we use.
